‘Mel’s Rink’ Battle Is Over

(via Mel’s rink)

After months of fighting the Montgomery County government over a backyard ice rink, named after his late stepdaughter, Marc Kohn and Montgomery County have reached a compromise. The country has agreed to build a synthetic ice rink in Poolesville, Maryland using existing county funds. Kohn told me that he “…can’t believe how things have turned out. It’s the best of both worlds. A true win, win for me, and the town.”

Growing up, I would always be watching the nationally televised games, whether or mot it was the Caps. I was always jealous to see kids outside playing hockey in backyard rinks. I would’ve loved that as a kid. Now, in my own community kids will be getting the chance that I never had.

Kohn is training for a Senior Olympics hokey tournament and is out on the rink everyday. Kohn is also a sports product developer. He has produced several hockey eccentric training aids that are currently being reviewed by hockey equipment manufacturers. He  uses these while on the ice as he trains.

Kohn hopes to have a licensing deal one one or two products soon. “Which would be way cool” he told me.  As someone who hopes to live in this area for the rest of my life, I am more than excited to see where this goes.
