USA Warriors, NoVa Icedogs Face Off

(via the Ice Dogs)

Sunday, I had the honor of being behind the bench as the Warriors took on the Nova Icedogs U16 Girls team at Fort DuPont. Though the Warriors had only 11 skaters for most of the game, they lived up to their name and came out on top.

The Warriors opened up the scoring early in the first half with a short side goal. Late in the second half, the Warriors scored twice more, to go up 3-0. The NoVa Icedogs broke the shutout in the final minute.

Players often have reasons other than ‘it’s hockey’ for playing against the Warriors, and the Icedogs were no different. “They fought for our country and this was a great way to give back. It was a great honor to share the ice with them.”

Both of the girls I talked to had both of their parents serve and one of them wants to serve herself. For the girls who played against the Warriors, it was more than just a game to them. It was a chance to give back to those who haven already given so much.
