Ovechkin Ties Bondra as Caps All-Time Points Leader, But So What After a Game Like That

Ovechkin before the game (Caps Outsider)

Alex Ovechkin’s statline looks awesome after Sunday’s game against Arizona. One goal, three assists, 7 shots on net, 5 hits. His two assists in the final two minutes of play tied him for the Capitals franchise lead in points at 825 with Peter Bondra.

But Washington’s 6-5 loss, its fourth in a row, left coach Barry Trotz and the Caps super frustrated. The Caps even had a players-only meeting after the game, leaving the media to wait much longer than usual to enter the locker room for interviews (oh poor us).

As for Ovechkin, it was likely the most pointless (no pun intended) four-point game of his career – his 14th overall – at least in terms of the game outcome. He had a goal and an assist in the first period and things were looking good. But then the second period happened. Ovi took two penalties (blame the refs all you want folks, those final 36 seconds were a disaster), the later of which led to a Coyotes game-tying goal in the final seconds. Then things got even worse. In the third, an awful Ovechkin turnover led directly to another goal, putting the Yotes up 5-3. While Ovechkin certainly isn’t the only Capital to make mistakes that led to goals, those errors, plus the loss to a last-place team, truly tainted “Tying Bonzai Day.”

At least now, the door is open for Ovi to break the record on Tuesday against the Flames, and more importantly, to end this losing streak.

One last thing. This is what the Coyotes were listening to, and singing along to, after their win. Seriously.
