2009-10: Ovie’s ‘Reckless’ Season

OvechkinWith his recent two-game suspension for kneeing, and Coach Budreau’s use of the word ‘reckless’ while describing his style of play, Alex Ovechkin’s season has been defined.

A rundown of Ovie’s career:

  • 2005-06: The Ovie-vs.-Crosby-for-Calder season and the guy who scored ‘The Goal’
  • 2006-07: The sophomore slump as he posted career lows but still registered 92 points and led the Capitals in scoring.
  • 2007-08: The runaway MVP year as he scored 65 goals, the most ever by a left wing.
  • 2008-09: The Ovechkin-celebrates-too-much year as he gave character to the league with his ‘hot stick’ celebration while being criticized by Don Cherry.

So, with Ovechkin’s slew-foot fine, a boarding major/game ejection, and suspension for kneeing, all in 21 games, 2009-10 will be known as Ovie’s ‘reckless’ season.

That, and Stanley Cup winner.
