Alex Ovechkin’s 900th Career Goal is a ‘Muffin’

via the NHL

Alex Ovechkin scored his 900th career goal on Wednesday against the St. Louis Blues.

The goal came after Jakob Chychrun’s shot bounced to Ovi off of the boards, and he spun and backhanded the shot past goalie Jordan Binnington. As fans cheered and teammates surrounded Ovi, Binnington grabbed the historic puck from the net and appeared to try to steal it, but the Caps got it back.

It was Ovi’s third goal of the season, fourth in his career against Binnington, and gave the Caps a 2-0 lead in the game.

“It was a muffin but I’ll take it,” Ovi told Al Koken after the game, meaning it was a much softer shot than he normally takes when he scores.

The Capitals will hold a pregame ceremony on Nov. 26 against the Winnipeg Jets to honor Ovechkin for becoming the first player to reach the 900-goal mark and the eighth player in to play 1,500 games with one franchise, a feat he accomplished on Oct. 25.

All time, Ovechkin ranks first in goals (900), power-play goals (326), game-winning goals (137), overtime goals (27), road goals (458), game-opening goals (150), game-tying goals (150), go-ahead goals (292), and empty-net goals (65), and second in even-strength goals (569), and multi-goal games (179).
