Alex Ovechkin Scores 1,000th Career Goal in Both Regular Season and Playoffs
Ovi Joins Gretzky in the 1,000 Goal Club
Alex Ovechkin scored his 1,000th career NHL goal (regular season and playoffs) on Sunday in the Capitals’ 3-2 overtime loss to the Colorado Avalanche. He reached the mark in typical Ovi fashion, scoring from his office in the left faceoff circle, on a pass from Dylan Strome. Cole Hutson also assisted, giving him his first NHL assist.
Ovechkin is only the second player in NHL history to reach 1,000 combined goals, joining Wayne Gretzky, who has 1,016 in both the regular season and the playoffs.
As cool as this number is, it also puts him back in second place on a goal list, after he passed Gretzky last year with 895 regular season goals.
If Ovi plays another season, he’ll likely catch Gretzky for total goals, though he certainly won’t catch Gretzky’s playoff record of 122. Ovi is actually in 12th place on that list with 77 goals, in 161 games.
Check out a complete list of every goal Ovi has scored, who assisted on his goals, how well Ovi has done against each team in the league, and who he scored against.
