The Capitas’ modern era, also known as the Alex Ovechkin era, began in the 2005-2006 season following the lockout of 2004-2005. During this time, the Caps have 14 1-0 victories, less than one a season, making Sunday’s victory against Columbus relatively rare. The goalie is typically the hero in these games, and it should be no surprise that Braden Holtby has six of these wins. Michal Neuvirth won twice.
As for the goal scorers, Ovechkin has three, and Jason Chimera has two. Only two of these games ended very late – a 2016 game when John Carlson scored in overtime, and a 2011 game in which Ovi scored with 1:14 remaining. The Capitals are generally outshot in these games, including on Sunday, 19-38. Only six of the 14 games did the Caps outshoot their opponent. On average, the Caps have been outshot 25.28 to 29.21.
The Caps have also lost 11 1-0 games in this era, most recently last January to Vegas, but have outshot their opponent in seven of those games.
