The Washington Capitals Play a Meaningful Hockey Game Tonight

Good morning from MedStar Capitals Iceplex, home of the Washington Capitals, who look to kick off their 2022 campaign for a Stanley Cup. Let me start this by saying, I’m not exactly sure where this is going to go. But it’s opening day, dang it, and I’m going to write something about my favorite hockey team.

Since I was fortunate enough to have the day off, I decided to buy tickets tonight’s home opener and immerse myself in opening day activities. Waking up early this morning, I took care of the few responsibilities I had and rushed myself to the 8-story garage where the Washington Capitals practice.

I’m not normally a vibes guy, but upon walking into the practice rink you could tell there’s a different vibe around this team. They seem excited, hungry, ready. Everyone, from the older seasoned veterans down to the extra skaters, were hooting, hollering, and giving each other stick taps.

Capitals GM Brian MacLellan had quite the offseason in terms of talent acquisition. From signing Connor Brown and Dylan Strome to shake things up, to bringing in a new goalie tandem in Darcy Kuemper and Charlie Lindgren. Finally there’s zero doubt as to who the starting goaltender is in Washington. Plus, they’ve injected just enough new faces to keep things fresh, while also giving opportunities for young guys to step up.

Hometown hockey guy Joe Snively remains on the roster along with Matt Irwin and Connor McMichael, whom are all currently getting extra practice reps. Aleksei Protas has moved up the the second line, with Anthony Mantha and newly acquired Dylan Strome. All of whom are over 6’3, by the way. Everyone’s favorite Slovak defenseman Martin Fehervary retains his spot as John Carlson’s defense partner. Erik Gustafsson makes his debut as a Capital paired with Trevor Van Riemsdyk. All additions that should, in theory, compliment each other quite nicely.

Now we finally get to find out how it works in practice, in real time, at game speed.
