Christian Djoos Clears Waivers, Caps Set Opening Night Roster
The writing was on the wall when the second the salary cap was set at $81.5 million, and not the anticipated $83 million. The Caps would be in cap trouble and there would be casualties. That casualty was Christian Djoos.
Luckily the Caps did not lose Djoos as he cleared waivers. Liam O’Brien and Michael Sgarbossa also cleared waivers. All three have been assigned to Hershey.
Djoos’s 2018-19 season was cut short after 45 points after requiring surgery for compartment syndrome. Djoos recorded 10 points. Djoos returned for three games in the Capitals first round-exit to the Carolina Hurricanes.
The Caps still need to make a few more cuts prior to Tuesday’s 5 p.m. decline to be at a maximum of 23 on the roster and be below the salary cap. Instead the Capitals placed Michael Kempny on injured non roster who is still recovering from hamstring surgery. This he does not count against the roster limit. In addition, Evgeny Kuznetsov does not count towards the limit or against the cap while serving his three game suspension.
#Caps place D Michal Kempny on injured non roster (can be activated when healthy; no minimum game threshold)

This means the Caps are down to 23 players. Kuznetsov and Kempny don’t count against the roster limit and they have cap relief from Kuznetsov suspension. Essentially punting salary cap and roster issues for a week. https://t.co/BPeHvqtur4
