Local Rink Finalist for Kraft Hockeyville USA

On Saturday, April 9th prior to the Penguins and Flyers game on NBC, Kraft Hockeyville shared their ten finalists for Kraft Hockeyville USA for 2016. The Rockville Ice Arena is one of the five finalists in the East region.

The winning rink from Kraft Hockeyville gets $150,000 in arena upgrades and gets to host an NHL pre-season game. You can vote 100 times a day. Voting for this round ends on April 14. The two finalists from the “East” and “West” regions will then have another round of voting to decide the regional representative. You can vote 50 times by texting “Rockville” to 35350. You can also vote 50 times here. That is also where you can see what, Joel, said to get Rockville Ice Arena in the running.

I spoke with Jeff Woods, of the USA Warriors, via email, about Rockville being nominated. He told me that the Warriors have been practicing their since 2012. “They have been a great partner”, he said. “It would be awesome to have the Warriors flag fly outside as an NHL pre-season game is played.”

Woods thinks that just having the Warriors mentioned in the proposal would bring awareness to the program. “It certainly can’t hurt!” he said. “I have to remind myself that it’s Rockville Ice Arena up for winning the contest and not the Warriors.  I’m hoping that the arena includes us in the festivities if/when we win the contest.”

I also have a personal connection to the Rockville Ice Arena. It is where I learned to skate when I was 5. I live about 15 minutes from there. Although I have never played the game, my high school, Sherwood in Sandy Spring, occasionally has games there. It will always have a special place in my heart.
The hockey community in and around Rockville is excellent. You will never go more than 15 minutes seeing something Caps or NHL related. The sport is growing in the state of Maryland and the Rockville Ice Arena would be a great headquarters to continue growing the game not only in Maryland, but across the DMV.
