The Yvon Labre Award

Almost every season since 1984, the Caps Fan Club tallies the ballots of fans who vote on their favorite player. The winner receives the Yvon Labre award, named after former Caps captain Yvon Labre. The winner gets his name engraved on the trophy and a small trophy of his own, which is presented by the Caps fan club.

Unsurprisingly, Alex Ovechkin has won in each of his seasons with the team, though Nicklas Backstrom received the same number of votes last year. The trophy is displayed at the Caps Fan Club table, but only during the playoffs. Voting typically starts in February. The award wasn’t given out during the lockout-shortened season in 1994-95 and during the 2004-05 lockout.
