The AHL All Star Skills Competition in a Nutshell

Hey, look! Boyd Kane is on TV! Gasp! Awe! (All Photos Credit: M. Richter)

This weekend, as the best of the NHL is lighting up Ottawa (or something like that), a similar gathering of AHL notables is taking place in Atlantic City, NJ.  As I’ve mentioned before, three Bears grace the lineup (Keith Aucoin, Chris Bourque, and Captain Boyd Kane).  In the interest of entertainment, I present a brief summary of today’s Skills Competition in Pictures:

First, players skated in circles (Pictured: Chris Terry of the Charlotte Checkers)
And occasionally they fell down (Jonathan Audy-Marchessault of the CT Whale pictured)
Some of them went REALLY FAST! (T. J. Hensick of the Peoria Rivermen wasn't actually one of them, but watch him try!)

Goalies gossiped (In this case, Tyson Sexsmith of the Worcester Sharks and Jeff Zatkoff of the Manchester Monarchs)
Goalies were subjected to impossible odds and situations (Peoria's Cade Fairchild & Abbotsford Heat's Krys Kolanos shoot on Worcester Shark Tyson Sexsmith)
The representatives of the Hershey Bears got to relax and channel their inner Pee-Wees for a while (larger group is Team "East")
Mascots proved to be ridiculous (as par usual - in this case, Pucky of the Connecticut Whale)
And in the end, autographs were signed (Keith Aucoin shows off his skills with a Sharpie)

Em is a fan of hockey first and individual teams second, with geographical ties that cross the NHL. She was born in the Midwest, raised along the East Coast, and graduated from a university in Western Canada. A firm believer in context above all else, and a card-carrying on-ice official with USA Hockey, she splits her time between the big picture and the details. When not covering the AHL and ECHL for Caps Outsider, her photography can be found on Behance and Flickr. She also occasionally chimes in about the Hershey Bears on the Power Play Post Show.
