SI Calls Ovechkin a ‘Falling Star’

In an article titled “Falling Star,” Sports Illustrated writer Brian Cazeneuve gives ‘anecdotal evidence’ that the league has ‘figured out’ Capitals star Alex Ovechkin by being more physical.

Cazeneuve’s proof?

  • Ovechkin started a fight with Brandon Dubinsky in a loss to the Rangers Dec. 12.
  • He took a knee-to-knee hit from Matt Cooke against the Penguins recently.
  • Phoenix’s Derek Morris took a hooking penalty against him only 19 seconds into the game.

So there you have it, folks. It only took five seasons, two MVPs, and a couple of goal scoring titles until fellow NHLers figured out Ovie. The key to success was there all along: Take penalties against him.

Check out the Sports Illustrated article for a laugh.

Except SI is right about Ovechkin not being an elite player this season. Really, since the Olympics last season.

this was a terribly written article about a great player.

Wow, it doesn't take much to write for that magazine huh, or did they suffer from an article slump and had to come up with something to fill space ;-)
