For the second straight week, when the Wizards and Capitals played on the same night, the Wizards, with their bottom-of-the-standings record, got top billing on Comcast SportsNet, while the Capitals were pushed to CSN+, which many subscribers don’t even get. As a P.G. County resident, once again I switched to Comcast channel 25, only to see another message displayed ‘This channel will be available shortly.’
I called Comcast, and they told me that channel 25 was doing ‘an upgrade’ and it will be available within 24-48 hours. Never mind that the Capitals were also supposed to be shown on 25 last [...]
Archive for November, 2009
Longtime Capitals fans know what I’m talking about. Back at the old Capital Centre, we got free Capitals pucks the day before Thanksgiving. Hockey sticks for the kids on New Year’s Day. A Bob’s Big Boy burger coupon when the Caps pitched a shutout. Best of all, a pizza coupon when the Caps scored six goals, which usually happened in the third period as the fans chanted ‘Pizza! Pizza!’
I still have many of those free Capitals pucks. The sticks broke, but only after many games of street hockey with friends. My family always headed to Bob’s Big Boy for the [...]
Jay Beagle Has Yet to Be ‘Hazed’
With eight NHL games under his belt, Capitals rookie Jay Beagle is well aware of what will be coming to him soon.
No, he won’t be getting his head shaved, or getting tied to the goal post as teammates take shots. Instead, he’ll have to do what the Capitals have replaced with traditional hazing: Pick up a fat restaurant tab.
“I’m saving every paycheck… It might as well be steak and lobster, something good… surf ‘n’ turf,” Beagle said.
Keep in mind, the meal is for 20 or so players, plus coaches and trainers. That’s about 30 people who are ordering whatever they [...]
Capitals Honor Pollin
The Capitals honored team founder and longtime owner Abe Pollin Wednesday with a moment of silence before the game against Buffalo.
Coach Boudreau spoke briefly about Pollin after the Capitals’ win. “For what he’s done for Washington, it’s a great loss… If it wasn’t for him, the only team that might be here is the Redskins… It’s a great loss for the city and the people of Washington.”
Abe Pollin’s Greatest Moment
Longtime Capitals and Wizards owner Abe Pollin died Tuesday at the age of 85, a great loss to the Washington DC community.
Pollin had a long and storied career, but what Capitals Outsider chooses to focus on is the fact that he is one of very few people who had – and took – the opportunity to expose and dismiss NBA legend Michael Jordan.
Jordan came to the Wizards in 1999, first as president of basketball operations, then as a player, but the team didn’t make the playoffs during those years. In 2003, Pollin fired Jordan, saying that he had detrimental [...]
Panic Time for Caps?
The Capitals finished playing their third game in four nights Monday in Ottawa as the Senators rallied from a 3-1 deficit and won in overtime, 4-3. Saturday, they lost in Toronto in a shoot-out, and Friday, they lost to Montreal in Washington. Six points up for grabs, the Capitals earn only two. Up next, Buffalo on Wednesday. And the Sabres ain’t bad.
Despite owning the best records in the Eastern conference, the Capitals are consistently showing that they have a lot of room for improvement. Rarely does a game go by, even a win, where the Caps just don’t display the [...]
