Stingrays Celebrate “Undie Sunday”; Clay Stevenson Shines

(Caps Outsider)

It’s not uncommon in the minor leagues for a team to host an ‘Undie Sunday’ game where, after the home team scores its first goal, fans toss new packages of underwear and other items onto the ice to be donated to charity. This happened at the Caps’ ECHL affiliate South Carolina Stingrays on Sunday at North Charleston Coliseum, where goalie prospect Clay Stevenson made 37 saves in a 3-1 win over the Orlando Solar Bears.

The Stingrays dominated much of the game but didn’t score until late in the second period when Ryan Scarfo finally beat Orlando goalie Brad Barone. Orlando tied the game a couple of minutes later. In the third, Kevin O’Neil scored a beautiful power play goal on assists by Jonny Evans and Michael Kim. Anthony Del Gaizo scored an insurance goal with about 6:24 left. The Solar Bears, however, didn’t back off, putting up 21 shots in the third period, but Stevenson didn’t let anything through.
