One of the best moves of the summer for the Caps was the re-signing of 23-year old Jakub Vrana to a two-year, $6.7 million contract extension. The left winger quickly became a fan favorite after making the Caps’ opening night roster in 2017. Even though his rookie season had its ups and downs, Vrana made a splash in his playoff debut. He scored his first playoff goal against the Penguins, and scored the first goal in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals against the Vegas Golden Knights.  He ended that postseason with 8 points in 23 games. His speed and agility helped the Caps win their first Stanley Cup. So, it’s no wonder that fans have taken a shine to the young Czech, whose play on the ice is just as dazzling as his boyish grin and fun-loving sense of humor.  Who could forget the hilarious documentation of Vrana’s Stanley Cup tattoo or the touching video of the Stanley Cup Champ taking the cup home to the Czech Republic? Precious.

That is why fans are enamored with Vrana and can’t wait to see him back in action for the Caps in September.  One such fan, Karen Jaffe, a sketch artist from Great Falls, VA lent her artistic talent to our lead picture of Vrana.  A retired account executive from VMware, Jaffe has taken up sketching as a hobby and found the Caps’ young forward to be a great subject.

“To me, Jakub has a quiet confidence that I see in his eyes in the photo, which compelled me to sketch him,” Jaffe said.  “He has a great smile and he looks like he’s thrilled to be a Washington Capital.”
