Ovechkin Gets 500th Point

Alex Ovechkin scored his second goal of the game Thursday – the 500th point of his career – as he passed the puck to himself through a Ranger’s legs and chipped at the puck, which hit Henrik Lundqvist, went up in the air and in. He did this with about 8 seconds remaining in the second period, and it was in the 373rd game of his career.

A couple of unusual things about the Capitals 6-5 victory: Nicklas Backstrom assisted on four goals and netted the game-winner, but got second star of the game behind Ovechkin, who finished with two goals and one assist. If it weren’t his 500th career point, we’re thinking Backstrom should’ve gotten player of the game, for sure.

Other notes:

  • Alex Semin had five shots on goal, but no points, while Backstrom and Ovechkin also had five shots apiece.
  • Despite scoring six goals, no Capitals finished better than a +1.
  • The Capitals were 3/9 on the power play, while the Rangers were 3/6. Those are horrible penalty-killing numbers for both teams.
  • The Rangers took four straight minor penalties in the third period.
  • Sean Avery was a -2 for the game.
