This was spotted at the concession line during the Caps’ 4-3 win against the Blue Jackets. Shouldn’t the number be 218?

From hockeyfights.com, Cap John Erskine squared off with Blue Jacket Jared Boll during the first period Thursday in a bout that took forever to unfold (reminiscent of a D.J. King fight), before the two threw multiple hay-makers and eventually landed on the ice. Erskine only played one shift for the rest of the game, but Coach Bruce Boudreau said Erskine’s injury had nothing to do with the fight. Ted Leonsis, among several others, didn’t agree that Erskine should have fought, while On Frozen Blog got Jason Chimera’s take on the incident.

Hurricanes’ captain Eric Staal apparently got clipped with a high stick and bled all over the inside right circle during the second period of Tuesday’s game. Not until the ice resurfacer ran over it did the stain disappear. This would be Staal’s contribution to the Inova blood drive recently held by the Caps.  Photos of the cleanup effort after the jump.

It brings me no pleasure to announce that the Arturs Irbe Facebook page, the one in which the quirky goaltending coach contributes only by enthusiastically announcing the number of fans he has, is not really him. When asked about it, Irbe and the Capitals’ media relations denied that he runs the page. This should be heartbreaking news for more than 900 folks who fell for this hoax, as we ‘liked’ a page that we actually thought that he ran himself. It’s a good thing that goalies wear masks, because Michal Neuvirth doesn’t exactly have a pitbull’s glare of aggression that sparks pants-wetting fear in opponents with a glance alone. While others insult the young Czech by comparing his looks to Icelandic singer Bjork, we would like to celebrate his resemblance to something far more innocent and classy.

As we’ve discovered, the most valuable Capitals bobbleheads are those given out at the blood drives, because they’re more limited than the others and you’ve got to give blood to get one. This weekend, the Caps held another Inova blood drive, with Semyon Varlamov bobbles as the prize to those who rolled up their sleeves. Sure enough, a few folks who either participated in the blood drive or weaseled their way into getting a Varley bobblehead have listed the item on eBay, and they’re sure to get a nice payday out of it. Several celebrities lately who seemingly have no ties to Washington have suddenly been jumping on the Capitals bandwagon for various reasons, including Pauly D from Jersey Shore, comedian Tom Green, and now heavy metal legend Ozzy Osbourne. We know Green’s story, and we know Pauly and Ovie have been caught paling around. But Ozzy? Other than the Caps game entertainment folks playing his music, especially his latest hit Let Me Hear You Scream, Osbourne makes as much sense as a D.C. celebrity mascot as Green or Pauly D.
