A Fan’s Guide to Attending a Caps Game

Please check out Capitals Outsider’s A Fan’s Guide to Attending a Caps Game at the new url, which we’ll be updating throughout each season.

If you’re looking for an official guide to attending a Washington Capitals game, you can find it on their website. That will give you all you need to know about alcohol sales, elevators and accessible seating. But there are unwritten rules (like don’t bring youth baseball bats) that fans should know when attending a Capitals game, and those who don’t know them may find themselves either confused, or even embarrassed, if they don’t read these guidelines. So Capitals Outsider presents… A Fan’s Guide to Attending a Washington Capitals Game.

Scalpers and Scalping

You go to the game without tickets, the game is sold out, but you’ll pay anything to get in. The scalpers are outside the Verizon Center, in plain view, asking anyone who walks by whether they need tickets or have tickets to sell. This is where your negotiating skills matter, and this doesn’t vary much from team-to-team. However, if you follow the ‘National Anthem’ rule, in which you wait for the anthem to start before you approach a scalper, you’ll likely get a cheaper ticket. In fact, the longer you wait, the cheaper the seat may be. However, by then they’ll be more likely to be out of tickets, so we highly encourage you to go to the game with tickets. By the way, you can get in trouble for buying and selling tickets on the street, but the police seem to allow certain people to do it.

The National Anthem

It has become a tradition at the Verizon Center – and in most Washington and Baltimore-area arenas – to scream “O” during the “O! say does that star-spangled banner yet wave” part of the national anthem. That started in Baltimore for the Orioles, but made its way across the region long ago, though Washington has since gotten its own baseball team.

For the last several years of Olaf Kolzig’s career, keen fans shouted “Olie” in hopes of changing that tradition. However with his departure it seems like the crowd is back to the nonsensical “O” and we really wish they’d just stop it. Occasionally, someone will yell out, “This isn’t Baltimore!” right after that, which is even sillier.

In the past two seasons, a new tradition has emerged during the national anthem – so far only for Capitals games. Fans now also scream “Red” during the “and the rockets’ red glare” part as tribute to the slogan “Rock the Red.” All the screaming is probably a bit inappropriate, but at least we don’t boo the Canadian Anthem. Ted Leonsis has made a push to encourage the fans to sing along during the anthem, and it seems to be catching on. So we suggest singing along, shouting “Red” if you must, and losing the “O.”

Check out CapitalsOutsider coverage on the national anthem singers.

Goals and Hat-tricks

After a goal by the Caps, on queue, you’ve gotta yell “It’s all your fault!” and point to the opposing goalie.

When the other team scores, after the announcer says who scored it, you yell out “Who cares?”

Fans typically toss their hats onto the ice after a home team player’s third goal of the game. While this behavior is technically against NHL rules, it rarely results in a minor penalty against the home team.

A shootout goal does not count toward a player’s goal total, and therefore cannot be the hat-trick goal. However, fans in Washington don’t seem to care and still liter the ice with their hats.

Chants

Let’s Go Caps. This happens throughout the game, and especially right before the opening face-off as the horn guy leads the way. Also look for Caps fan Goat, who leads this chant.

C-A-P-S, Caps, Caps, Caps!

We want wings! Fans chant this when the Caps have four goals. A fifth gets you a coupon for free chicken wings.

Woop! Woop! Chant this when former Capitals on the opposing team have the puck.

Depending on who it is, and what’s going on, the fans may taunt the opposing goaltender by chanting his name over and over again. This was very common in the days of Ron Hextall when the Philadelphia Flyers came to the Capital Centre.

Scoreboard

If they play the Hockey Song, sing it. The lyrics are on the screen. Here’s a Capitals variation of the song:

If they play the Unleash the Fury video, it is about the most intense fan-participation chant I have ever heard anywhere. The place virtually explodes with adrenaline.

Here is another great video the Caps sometimes play. Now show me your war face!

If you’re sitting in the 400 level during the Capitals Move of the Game, stand and cheer and hope for a seat upgrade once they zoom in on you.

If you’re caught on the Kiss-Cam, kiss the person you’re sitting next to, regardless of who they are, even your sister. Trust us, the kiss is better than getting booed, because they will show you again until you cave to the pressure. And watch this closely because if it’s a friend or coworker up on the scoreboard, you’ve gotta make fun of them the next day.

Getting Capitals Fan of the Game is difficult, but if you come in an original costume, such as being dressed as Ted Leonsis or an astronaut, you not only have a good shot at winning it, but a shot at getting invited up to Ted’s box. And you will be shown on the big screen.

Study your pop culture history, because you may get selected for the Name That Year quiz, in which they typically name a movie, a song or album, and a Capitals’ feat. They’ll give you three consecutive years and if you guess the year right, you get a prize pack.

At some point the Caps will give you three songs and they’ll ask you to text the one you want to hear. Also at some point they may ask you to text a message and it will show up on the big screen.

Other things to know

Don’t stand during play or enter your seat during play. You get in the way of the game and you will get pelted with popcorn.

Don’t hit on the Red Rockers. They’re like cheerleaders, not strippers.

If the team mascot Slapshot is around, pose for a photo with him.

Free food: The Papa John’s Pizza Giveaway and the Chipoltle Burrito Giveaway. They also sometimes throw T-shirts into the crowd, sometimes via parachutes from the rafters.

For games where they’re giving away something, like a bobblehead or fridge magnet, arrive early before they run out.

The intermission events vary, but usually the Mites play. Always fun to watch kids falling down on ice.

Did we miss anything? Name it in the comments.

Hey Caps Fans that was amazing tonight!!! Congrats to our team sending those Rags packin'. As the sun sets on the Lone Ranger, his head tilted in agony as he dangles in the wind. Come join the fastest Caps Fan page on facebook. Capitals Fans United is approaching 900 members and would love to keep it going.
Just shoot me a friend request on Facebook, you can also now google search the profile at Capitals Fans United.

the whooping yell started with Larry Murphy when he left town and promptly won cups with the Pens and the Wings. The other big player was Gonchar. As far as I know this is only for defensemen who leave. (Example: Jagr was booed, and nobody said anything for Jeff Halpern or Dainus Zubrus)

Thank you for the help!

I thought we yelled "O" because of OVI? I'm a veteran and it doesn't bother me either.

What does bother me is fans who get so freaking stinking drunk they ruin it for everyone sitting near them. Glad you people have a good time, but you really ruin it for everyone else. Yeah it's a sporting event, ok ok, but if you can get wasted AND retain some manners then I'll be impressed. Otherwise, I already know all the swear words -- thanks! xox

Is there a particular chant they do when Green scores? I thought I heard something the last 2 games I went to.

About the screaming during the national anthem, get over it. I am annoyed that I have to put up with an obnoxious and ungermane display of nationalism at all.

About the leaning, get over it. I sometimes sit in the first row of 400 level and if you don't lean forward you have to watch the whole game through a pane of glass, which distorts the view and gives you a headache. I lean over as little as possible so that the glass is just below the near-side boards. Unfortunately, the building design does not allow for a clear view to those that want to sink into their seat for the whole game. If it really bothers you, you can sit back as long as you like on the couch as you watch on tv at home.

I come down from Baltimore and spend my families hard earned money to go to these games. The blah blah blah respect the veterans old saw about the "O" is tired. I'm a veteran myself and I yell "O".

I stand with BaltimoreBerserk on this one.

O!!!!!

It was last season that the "It's all your fault" started, not "this year" as someone stated in the comments. Click the link above to see a WaPo story on it, and a video of the guy who claims to have started it all.

Also, the Whoop Whoop is supposed to be reserved for former Caps D-men, and only those worthy of the honor. It did start with Murphy, but it would be deemed appropriate for someone like Sergei Gonchar, but not Emminger or knuckleheads like Brendan Witt.

As far as the hat trick goes, it is actually in the NHL rulebook that throwing hats on the ice for a hat trick is one exception to the throwing things on the ice rule, along with certain pre-approved promotions (like a teddy bear toss for charity, etc.).

As far at the 'O' in the anthem goes, to claim it its origination and use is exclusive to the Baltimore region isn't entirely accurate.

From personal experience, it has been done at various events (minor league hockey, college basketball, monster truck rallies, arena football) in the mid-Atlantic and South my entire life.

Another thing that many of the new Caps fans need to learn, the rules and the terminology. I used to go to caps games just a few years ago when only 8,000 attended the games and the atmosphere was lacking. It is great that Washington is getting excited about hockey, but the fans need to learn the rules and the terminology before running their mouths.

I almost got in a fight with a caps fan in a bar the last time they played the red wings because he was loudly screaming "CYCLE! CYCLE!" When the puck was in the Caps defensive zone. Embarrassing. All you legit Caps fans should do your part to educate the novice hockey fans to gain some fan credibility!!!!

Bingo. Some people are always gonna find something to be "offended" by. It's sad for them. Leaning forward in a seat or standing up during play, that interferes with my ability to see what I paid WAAAAAAAAAAY too much money to see. And no one has THAT right.

LET'S GO CAPS!!!

Thank you so much to the person who posted about the "leaners." Those are fans who lean so far forward in their seats that they block your view of about 1/3 of the ice, and most maddeningly the net. The higher up you go the viewing angle gets worse and the more of a problem it is. I have a bunch of broker seats in front of me and it is a big problem every game. When you ask people to sit back you either get a dirty look or remark or they sit back for like only 5 minutes. It ruins the game if you bring kids or have a very short wife like I do.

Really the only thing the Caps can do is to make public announcements like they do to remind people not to go back to their seats while the puck is in play. I've talked to people at the Caps about it and gotten a very positive response that they are going to try and deal with the problem somehow.

I think the business suit d-bags who just talk through the whole game about anything BUT hockey, or are on their blackberry for all 60 minutes in a $300 seat are way more disrespectful than raising your voice for a single syllable during the anthem...

You know what makes America great? Not our anthem, not our flag, the fact that I can raise my voice by about 30 db on one syllable during it, and no one is allowed to tell me not to. That's America at it's finest. I love this country!

LET'S GO CAPS!

Darren, I'll take your points one at a time.

Stewart – “Darren, just because people don’t mean to show disrespect doesn’t make it any better.”

Sure it does. We’re not talking about substituting bad words or stepping on the American flag. Most of the people are singing along and when it gets to the O or RED they simply shout it. They’re just showing enthusiasm.

So, by your logic, if I killed your mother, wife, sister or other family member, then told you, "I didn't mean to do it," would the loss be any less painful for you? Offensive is offensive, no matter what the intent is.

SOME people feel like singing along is disrespectful to the singer. So by your logic everyone who sings is disrespecting America. It doesn’t matter that they don’t mean to…

That's not my logic. If you were to look up protocols for proper behavior during the playing of the anthem, it reads as follows: "... it is customary to face the flag, remove your hats (for gentleman), and place your right hand over your heart. Singing is optional." You can read more about that at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Star-Spangled_Ban...

I can see why it bothers some people (which is why i stopped because it bothered my friend) but you need to realize that’s all in your head… I guess my point is don’t do it obviously if it offends you, but don’t take it so personally either… some people here are acting as if by shouting O you hate America… where 99% of the time its the exact opposite.

I'll go back to what CapsQueen so eloquently posted a while back: "Please do stand during the national anthem, take off your hat and don’t talk. You can afford a few minutes of your time to honor the country and what it stands for."

I'll add, there's nothing wrong with singing along as long as you do it respectfully. Shouting "Oh!" and "Red!" is taking attention away from the flag and its meaning, and bringing it to yourself. That's not why we sing the anthem and that's not why it was written. Again, try to show some class.

Stewart - "Darren, just because people don’t mean to show disrespect doesn’t make it any better."

Sure it does. We're not talking about substituting bad words or stepping on the American flag. Most of the people are singing along and when it gets to the O or RED they simply shout it. They're just showing enthusiasm.

My season-ticket holder partner doesn't like it, so I haven't joined in with the O since 07-08, but let me make an example. SOME people feel like singing along is disrespectful to the singer. So by your logic everyone who sings is disrespecting America. It doesn't matter that they don't mean to...

No it just doesn't make sense that way. I can see why it bothers some people (which is why i stopped because it bothered my friend) but you need to realize that's all in your head... I guess my point is don't do it obviously if it offends you, but don't take it so personally either... some people here are acting as if by shouting O you hate America... where 99% of the time its the exact opposite.

To each their own ya know?

I agree that we should learn and sing 'O Canada' when hosting a Canadian Team. It's a cool anthem and doesn't require a 4-octave range.

Massively agree that a person who attends a Caps game should do so because they WANT to see and enjoy the game. Not just so that they can SAY that they were there and impress their friends. So, please sit down when the puck is in play.

Someone once told me that there is a light near the Player benches that indicates "TV timeouts". That's usually a good time to move if you can't wait for the intermission.

Lastly, a hockey fan rule that applies everywhere (not just in DC):

Never, never, never, EVER wear a hockey sweater tucked into your pants. It is disrespectful and makes the wearer look like a doofus.

yeah, the "all your fault" thing started last season, and is, my opinion poor sportsmanship. In DC we like that we are a place that respects our athletes. Its really really tackey. Our whole section hates it and thinks its immature.

Susan, I know what you mean. I called my rep about it its gotten so bad..

I go down to the lower level for warmups regardless of
who is televising the game (national or local), the
ushers don't mind.

Another pet peeve of mine is getting up when the puck is in play. My seat is surrounded by broker owned seats so there are different people every game. They all seem to think a power play is the perfect time to get beer. And they walk don't even bother to walk quickly...

The "O" is silly so I just yell "OV!!" since Olie's gone; similarly, it makes more sense to yell "OV scores" (and before that, "Bondra scores!") rather than "Bobby scores!" during the hockey song (the best version of which, by the way, is done by the hockey-rock group The Zambonis; just buy it). As to the "it's all your fault" chant I've heard it's a Cornell tradition (they did as well as some other, more clever things--like simultaneously lifting a newspaper to read when the opposing line-up is announced--when I attended a game there last year) so I'm not sure it started at Michigan.

Oh, and let's not forget.... wait until a stoppage of play before leaving or returning to your seat. If you aren't able to get back to your seat or leave your section before the play starts, sit on the stairs and wait until the play stops again. People can't see through you when you're standing in the aisle and it's rude to do that, too.

Darren, just because people don't mean to show disrespect doesn't make it any better. There are certain things that shouldn't be trifled with and the American flag and the national anthem are among those things. If you really want to feel like you're participating, then, as the PA announcer says, "Sing it respectfully." As JMAC says, it's "not a team fight song."

You forgot about honoring the military and standing for them when they are introduced. Considering what they give up, standing and clapping isn't much to ask from us.

Please do stand during the national anthem, take off your hat and don't talk. You can afford a few minutes of your time to honor the country and what it stands for.

Be respectful of the people sitting around you, don't stand in front of them when the puck is in play or block their view with signs you made. Show your sign between breaks in play when the camera will actually NOT be focused on the ice.

As for the chants, the "all your fault" has been around for quite sometime at Caps games it didn't 'just start' this season. Regardless, chant whatever you want, don't wait till someone else tells you to! Be a loud proud member of the Red Army and support the Caps!!!!

Stop the O during the Anthem. To each his own on the Red.

"All your fault" and "Who cares" is the lamest, douchiest thing ever. It's embarassing.

Throw your hat on the ice for ANYONE who scores a hat trick. A respected hockey tradition and I've NEVER seen a penalty called for it.

Pretty spot on on the rest of it, though. Nice article.

It's the National Anthem - not a team fight song. What Baltimore started - and we continue to do - is a disgrace. I really wish Ted would get on the mike before the start and ask people to sing it respectfully.

I grew up going to Orioles games... always yelled O at the national anthem, I thought it was something everyone did. I learned that its a Baltimore thing when I was in NY watching a Mets/Yankees game, I yelled OH and had my entire section staring at me... lesson learned.

That being said the people shouting it aren't doing it to offend or show disrespect. They feel like they're participating. If you're offended by that, then you're an easily offended person and you must be used to that by now.

My personal favorite is the guy in 402 who yells "BANNER!" because its just as nonsensical as yelling O or RED. Love it.

I disagree on the "woop woop" for all former players. This was started specifically for Larry Murphy who would comically give the puck away leading to a goal for the opponents. When he left (to win Stanley Cups of course, like all former Caps Pollin wouldn't pay) he was mocked with the woop woop goal siren.

I don't think it should be used on all players.

Stop with the Booing of the refs after every call. It makes the entire place look like they don't know hockey. The reality is that when one of our players is getting beat down the ice, they immediately resort to a hook or trip rather than trusting that the goalie will make the save. The Refs are doing their job, and 90% of the time make the exact right call.

@ Mike:

The t-shirt include a gift card for the free burrito. Good stuff!

@ Ben

If you boo all calls then it means nothing. If you boo only bad calls it causes second guessing and make up calls. Don't be the boy who cried wolf.

Whoever said not to boo the refs when the penalize the Caps was dead wrong! Boo the crap out of the bums!

@ Austintatious

Like @CapsFan said, the District Chophouse is a good spot to pre/post game. It's a brewery, so there's no Miller Lite, but they are reasonably priced. The food is excellent too. The downside is that you have to get there about 2 hours before the game starts to ensure a seat/table at the bar.

The Green Turtle is another decent place to congregate at after the game. It's located in the Verizon Center (1st floor, Section 104ish). A lot of the Caps "celebrities" go there after the game. I've seen the Horn Guy and Goat (the guy with the loud voice yelling "Let's Go Caps") there several times.

Couple of points:

I'm pretty sure the Chipotle "Burritos" they hand out are actually just t-shirts.

You forgot to mention the Al Pacino "Inches" speech.

Most people in my section yell "Ovie" during the national anthem. And if our captain has a good game (or scores a goal for that matter), you'll inevitably hear chants of M-V-P.

It's not a matter of "being so stuck up" as it is a matter of respect. I know plenty of people in the service and veterans who HATE the "Oh" and I can't say that I blame them. Show a little class.

I'm from Baltimore, I love the Caps and the Ravens. If it weren't for Ted accepting and encouraging Maryland fans to come all the way down to your arrogant city, the Caps would be missing about a 1/4 of it's fan base. Don't feel so entitled, the Caps are the hockey team of the DC, NoVa, Baltimore area. I'll yell O at any game I'm at to let people know where I'm from, it's fun. Stop being so stuck up about everything and let people have fun.

LET'S GO CAPS!!!!!!

@ Austintatious

You'll want to take Metro to the game. The Verizon Center is directly about the Gallery Place/Chinatown Metro stop on the Red, Green, and Yellow lines. To plan your trip go to wmata.com.

The beer in the arena is pretty much the same price regardless of brand, so look around for sometihng you like.

The "all your fault" and "who cares" chants are very college sports/middle school-esque and never happened before this season. It especially doesn't make sense when there's been a goaltender change- pass on this one.

However, do taunt the other team's goalie after he has given up two or more goals in a short period of time (example: Luuu-oooonnn-gooo).

On pre-game beer, RFD is a good bet (right down the street from VZ, 300+ beers), food is alright too. If you're looking classier try DC Chophouse or Jaleo (tapas).

And don't do the "all your fault" or "who cares"...... lamer than the cape guy (if that is possible).....

I'd prefer we'd get rid of any and all screaming during the national anthem and just sing along respectfully. You'll have two-plus hours to do all the screaming you want. You can't be quiet for two minutes and reflect on all of those who gave their lives to make this country a great one? It disrespects the anthem and it's rude to the singer. And as they say, "This ain't Baltimore." Keep that crap out of DC!

I've hated the O cheer anywhere but Camden for as long as I can remember. I've heard it everywhere, and I can't figure out the amount of ignorance behind yelling it at a Caps/Nationals/College Basketball game.

I tell myself they're yelling O for Ovie, so I can sleep at night.

Sorry but I disagree with two items. Not all Caps fans agree with yelling anything, O or Red, during the anthem. Just sing the entire anthem. Also, where I sit at VC, fans HATE the all your fault thing. Sometimes it makes sense but other times it is why, such as when the Caps are losing, the other team scores right after the Caps and before the goal announcement.

A lot of these chants are lifted from the University of Michigan. Especially the "its all your fault. Also, please chant "red" during the national anthem when the red wings are in town
Also, know your pop culture. Name the year
1) Titanic won the oscar for the best picture in this year.
2) Eve 6 came out with their first record going platinum
3) Before this past season it was the last time the caps won a playoff series

1996
1997
1998

:)

Thanks! This Saturday will be my first game at Verizon Center ever -- I live in Nashville now (curse of David Poile) and haven't been back to a game in DC since the Cap Centre.

Suggestions on best food stands in the arena (or places for pre/post game), best place to get a decent beer, etc would also be appreciated by true n00bs like me! Guess you could even expand that to parking/transport options, what time they open the gates, if there's an open spot to get autographs, is there a charity auction table set up somewhere, etc.

Thanks!

On the "It's all your fault" chant, you have to wait until Wes does the second announcement of the goal scorer and assisting players (if any). The moment he finishes, count out the number of goals and point at the opposing net minder when you get to the "it's all your fault" part of the chant.

I think we should all learn the lyrics to "Oh Canada" and sing it loud and proud when Montreal comes to town just to show em what class is. The last thing the NHL needs is politicization and booing the Star Spangled Banner does that in the worst of ways.

Nice job! A couple of things I'd add:

> Don't lean forward in your seat! It obstructs the view of the ice and causes everyone behind you to have to lean forward.

> On non-nationally televised games, you can take in the pre-game warmups from the lower (100) level seats, even if you're not sitting there for the game.

> Just because a ref called a penalty on a Cap doesn't mean it was a bad call. Be judicious with your booing of the refs.
