A Tale of Two Play-by-Play Calls: Joe Devin’s 3OT Series Winner

It’s not every day a hockey team plays a triple overtime Game 7 in the conference finals, but that’s what happened this week when the Capitals’ ECHL affiliate, the South Carolina Stingrays, defeated the Toledo Walleye, 1-0, to advance to the Kelly Cup Finals.

Obviously, a play call like that should contain a bit of emotion. Imagine if John Walton or Joe Beninati called a Caps 1-0 triple OT game in the conference finals, or Hershey’s Scott Stuccio.

In the Caps’ family of broadcasters, it was Joseph Zakrzewski who got the honors. But first, for comparison’s sake, let’s hear how another broadcaster called the goal.

Now, let’s listen to Zakrzewski
