Farewell (Again), Vitek Vanecek!

(Caps Outsider)

The Washington Capitals have traded goaltender Vitek Vanecek and the team’s second-round pick (46th 0verall) to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for a second-round pick (37th overall) and third-round pick (70th overall) in the 2022 NHL Draft, senior vice president/general manager Brian McLellan announced today.

Along with those second and third-round picks, the Capitals still own another third-round pick (85th overall), as well as fifth-round (149th overall), sixth-round (181st overall), and seventh-round picks (213th overall) in the draft.

Vanecek, 26, posted a 41-22-10 record with a 2.68 goals-against average and .908 save percentage in 79 career games with Washington. He was drafted by the Capitals with the second-round pick, 39th overall, in the 2014 NHL Draft.

Last night, Washington used the 20th pick in the first round of the 2022 draft to select Ivan Miroshnichenko, an 18-year-old Russian forward.

Note that this is the second time Vanecek left the team. Previously, he was selected in the expansion draft to Seattle, before the Caps brought him back.
