The Washington Capitals traded Jakub Vrana, Richard Panik, a 2021 1st round pick and a 2022 2nd round pick to the Detroit Red Wings for Anthony Mantha. In a separate move, the Caps traded a 5th round pick to the Philadelphia Flyers for Michael Raffl.

Vrana, a key player in the 2018 Stanley Cup run, had 77 points, including  36 goals, in 108 games over the last two seasons. However, he had zero points over the last two playoff seasons. Vrana, 25, a restricted free agent at season’s end, was drafted 13th overall by the Caps in 2014. Vrana was recently a healthy scratch.

Panik, 30, was brought in as a free agent signing before the 2019-20 season. He was signed through the 2022-23 season with a cap hit of $2.75M. Panik had 31 points in 95 games in Washington. Recently he cleared waivers after being a healthy scratch in favor of Daniel Sprong and Conor Sheary.

Mantha, 26, was drafted 20th overall in 2013 by the Red Wings and is signed through 2023-24 at a cap hit of $5..75M. Mantha has 21 points in 42 games for an atrocious Detroit team.

In addition, the Caps traded a 5th round pick to the Philadelphia Flyers for Raffl, 32. Raffl has eight points in 34 games this season. He is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
