Happy National Bobblehead Day! Reviewing 2018 and What’s to Come

(Caps Outsider)

National Bobblehead Day, an annual celebration taking place on January 7th, is a holiday developed by the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum to pay tribute to bobbleheads everywhere.

In years past, only a few new Capitals bobbleheads are released , but 2018 was different. It got off to a fast start with bobbleheads from the Washington Capitals (Jakub Vrana), Hershey Bears (Garrett Mitchell), and South Carolina Stingrays (Marcus Perrier) being handed out in the month of January. That was then followed up by two more Caps bobbleheads, one of Caps forward, T.J. Oshie, handed out at a game on March 20th, then shortly after, Caps radio announcer, John Walton, was given away in bobblehead form at the Spring Inova Blood Donor Services blood drive.

Things got a little quiet after that, but then the playoffs came around and the Caps surprised the world by lifting their first Stanley Cup in franchise history. For any avid bobblehead collector, the first thing that came to mind, after coming down from a high that likely lasted as long as the Caps Cup bender, was the bobbleheads that would come from this. Generally, Forever Collectibles releases a bobblehead line of various players on the winning team holding the Stanley Cup, and this year was no different. Sixteen of the players on the Caps received bobbleheads and with Conn Smythe, mini sets, and 3 footers included, a total of 23 bobbleheads were announced at one time.

Not shortly after, when we thought our wallets had already been beaten down already, they began slowly releasing more limited edition bobbleheads of players that commemorated special moments during the Caps Cup run. Evgeny Kuznetsov’s patented “birdman” celebration following his second round series clinching goal against the Penguins, Braden Holtby’s incredible save in game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals, a rendition of TJ Oshie riding the Metro to games 3 and 4 of those same finals, Devante Smith-Pelly lifting the Cup in a WWE belt, and obviously, Alex Ovechkin lifting the Stanley Cup were released.

Another special of Slapshot was released by FoCo, along with two others from Kollectico, and two more Inova bobbleheads of Chandler Stephenson and Michael Kempny rounded out the insane year of bobbles, bringing to Caps fans a record-breaking 38 bobbleheads.

While this upcoming year will not likely top lasts, we can still hope. But, we can look forward to what bobbleheads we will be expecting.

So far we know that an road version of the Ovechkin standard Stanley Cup bobblehead will be coming this spring. We also know that Forever Collectibles may not be done yet with the special bobbleheads and to keep a lookout for more. The second half of the Caps promotional schedule this season will feature an Evgeny Kuznetsov bobblehead. And finally, we’ve received hints from Inova that the next blood drive bobblehead will feature Capitals forward, Conn Smythe winner, and Stanley Cup Champion, Alex Ovechkin, but we are still waiting for an official release on that one so we will keep you all updated for when that comes.

Along with these confirmed bobbleheads, we can always count on Inova to hook us up with more so expect another three to be added to that list. Could we see bobbleheads of Madison Bowey, Christian Djoos, or Brett Connolly finally be made? We will have to wait and see. But for now we hope you’ve enjoyed a review of what might have been the greatest year for Capitals bobbleheads of all time and look forward to continuing to growing our collections together.
