Cook Like the Caps – For Charity!

Ever wanted to eat like a professional hockey player (without resorting to the terrifying Gary Roberts approach)?  The wait is over! On March 4, the Washington Capitals are releasing Cooking With the Caps, their own book of nutritional secrets.  It will include contributions from the players (2016-17 roster), coaches, and the infamous Slapshot.  It will also include asides from Mark Nemish (strength & conditioning coach), Sue Saunders (nutritionist), and SuperFd chef Robbie Wood (official caterers of the Caps).

Critical Details: Cost – $25. Available – March 4. Where to Buy – Home Games (MSE Foundation table & Team Store @ Verizon Center), Team Store @ Kettler, WashCaps.com, and MonumentalFoundation.org.

Proceeds from the book sales will go to benefit DC Central Kitchen, which “uses career training, job creation and sustainable business practices to strengthen local food systems and reduce disparities in health and economic opportunity.”  In short, they’re a non-profit that’s thinking outside of the traditional box to combat both the underlying causes of food insecurity and the daily realities of empty cupboards.

Charity cookbooks are something of a tradition in the professional hockey world.  The Hershey Bears published one a few years back benefiting the UPenn Children’s Hospital.  It was filled with creatively alliterative recipes like Coach French’s Toast and Troy’s Mann-icotti, and copies throughout the sales run were randomly autographed by players.  In a similar promotion, ten copies of Cooking With the Caps will include a ticket to exchange the book for an autographed edition.

SuperFd will also be running a four week promotion starting on March 6, where they’ll post a recipe a week on their instagram and fans are invited to whip it up and post photos of their results to Instagram with the hashtag #CapsCookbook.  One amateur chef each week will be selected to exchange their unsigned cookbook for an autographed version at the SuperFd Cafe at Kettler Capitals Iceplex.

Given that nearly all of the recipes in the Hershey book were the result of requests sent to the players’ mothers, I can’t wait to see what Mama Ovechkina has decided to share!
