Hershey Bears

Whitney Is The Hero! Bears win 3-2 In OT (Photos)

The Hershey Bears entered tonight’s contest going 3-9-3 so far in 2018.  The only team they have beaten since the turn of the year has been the Charlotte Checkers.  It has been a rough patch for the Bears, especially after last night.

The Rochester Americans come into town tonight and the Bears are looking to break the streak.  To do so, Hershey needs to start scoring first.  Their record when doing so this season is 11-0-1-2.

1st Period:

Hershey came out with a lot more energy than the previous night.  55 seconds into the period, they would jump on to the scoreboard, or so it looked.  The referee determined there was contact with the goaltender prior to the shot, causing Lunus Ullmark the inability to save the puck.

The Bears would be back however.  Brendan Guhle of the Americans would take a slashing penalty, giving the Bears the power play.  Riley Barber would make later score his 17th goal of the season.  Newcomer Joe Whitney would gather his first point with his new team with an assist.

1st Period Scoring:

HER Goal – 12:24 – Riley Barber (17), Assist(s): Joe Whitney (11), Travis Boyd (26) PP

2nd Period:

Hershey started on the power play to start the period when Guhle would return to the box for slashing.  This time around, the Bears would not capitalize on it.

Rochester was having a hard time getting shots to the net, only totaling 5 shots through the first half of the game.  With how the Bear’s year has been going, only holding a one goal lead wasn’t safe.

2nd Period Scoring: None

3rd Period:

With the Americans pushing their way back into the game, it was time for Hershey to fight back.  Huge hits by both teams set some motivation on both sides to get dirty in front of the net.

That dangerous one goal lead I talked about in the second period would go away when Eric Cornel of the Americans would tip one home with 2:37 left in the third.  This defaulted the crowd but not the Bears hopes.

Half of the stadium left the after the Americans went up 2-1 and they shouldn’t have.

Wayne Simpson would enter the zone with speed, whiff on the first shot and then score on the second attempt with 2.4 seconds remaining in the game.  This goal could be what the Bears have been looking for as a turning point.

Overtime:

With the momentum in their favor, Hershey did not wait long to end the game. Newcomer Joe Whitney would scoring his first goal as a Bear, sending Hershey home with their 4th win in 2018 and keeping record when scoring first in great shape.
