Backstrom Leads League in Points, is NHL’s 3rd Star of the Week

(Caps Outsider)

The running joke about Nicklas Backstrom is that he’s the NHL’s most underrated player. Once in awhile, he’s recognized with something, either a long-overdue All Star nod, or the oh-so-meaningful third star of the week award by the NHL.

Backstrom had three goals and six assists in the past week in four games, including a four-point night against New Jersey.  He currently leads the league in scoring with 11 points, tied with teammate Evgeny Kuznetsov and one in front of Alex Ovechkin.

You heard it right, folks. The league’s leading point producer is the NHL’s third star of the week.

The other stars:

  1. Nikolaj Ehlers, Winnipeg Jets (5 goals, 2 assists)
  2. Auston Matthews, Toronto Maple Leafs (4 goals)
