Stingrays Week 3 Recap: A Little Extra

via the Stingrays

After a stumbling start to the season, the South Carolina Stignrays needed overtime to win two of their three games this week. Especially sense they dropped a dud at home to Orlando, the Rays needed the extra frame to defeat the Elmira Jackals both times they faced them.

Steven McParland scored his first goal as a Stingray this season, then the Solar Bears put up six unanswered from six different skaters to chase Adam Carlson from the crease. Marcus Perrier got one on the board at the halfway mark of the game to end the score as 6-2. Ryan Massa took the win for Orlando with 24 saves and Carlson managed eight saves in the loss. Parker Milner made 12 saves in relief, allowing two goals.

Milner got the start the next game against the Jackals from North Charleston Coliseum. Colin Murray got the Jackals started 3:37 in to the first, only to be cancelled out by McParland with one second left to go in the frame. No scoring came in the next two periods, so these teams needed an extra five minutes to decide a winner. The winner came from Kelly Zajac three minutes in to the frame — it was his first of the season.

And good thing he got going in that game, because the Stingrays needed him on Sunday’s matinee against the same Jackals. Two Jackals’s goals in the first from Sebastien Sylvestre and Kyle Rankin put them ahead for a long period of time. The second passed with no scoring, then — with 21 third period shots — Gaul and a last-minute tally from Zajac brought Stingrays a point to go to the extra time. 33 seconds in, Joe Devin reprised his clutch character to give the Stingrays their first winning streak of the season.
