Stingrays Sign Two Rookie Defensemen

As the calendar turns to August, the South Carolina Stingrays announced two rookie defenders as part of their 2016-17 roster: Evan Moore and Alex Pompeo.

Moore completes a four year career at Robert Morris University with 27 assists and four goals. He served as alternate captain on the Colonials for their consecutive regular-season Atlantic Hockey championships. In the classroom, Moore made the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team four years in a row.

Moore — of Grosse Pointm Michigan — made his professional debut last season with the Elmira Jackals on March 23; he did not appear in another game last season. “He’s more of a stay-at-home defenseman. He competes really hard, is smart with the puck, and is a strong skater,” head coach Ryan Warsofsky said.

Pompeo — of Hingham, Massachusetts — posted a total of 75 points (26 goals, 49 assists) in 103 collegiate games. He played his first two seasons at the University of Southern Maine, part of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) – East before transferring to Salve Regina, ECAC – Northeast.

With the Slave Regina Seahawks, he led defensemen in scoring both of his seasons, becoming part of the All-ECAC Northeast First Team. Pompeo made his professional debut with the Columbus Cottonmouts (Souther Proffesional Hockey League) after finishing his senior year. He collected six points (two goals, four assists) in ten games.

“We’ve heard good things about his skating, and we are excited to get to see him in camp as he gets acclimated to professional hockey,” Warsofsky said.

Moore and Pompeo will join recently signed Steve Weinstien and Colton Saucerman on the Stingrays’ blue line.
