Alex Ovechkin Scores 40 for 8th Time
(Caps Outsider)
Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin scored his 40th goal of the season Friday, marking the eighth time he hit that mark in his 11-season career.
Two of the occasions when he failed to reach 40 came in the relatively forgettable 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons, when he only scored 32, and then 38 goals. The other came in the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season, when his 32 goals in the 48-game season was a resurgence.
Ovechkin scored his 40th in the third period on the power play, which tied the game against the Wild at 2-2. It was also his 10th goal in his last nine games.
It was the 515th goal of Ovechkin’s career, which ties him for 36th all time with Pierre Turgeon.
