Stingrays Week 15 Recap: We Appreciate Goals

A short home schedule greeted the South Carolina Stingrays before beginning a four-game stretch on the road in Missouri, Oklahoma, and Kansas next week. The Rays took both games to improve on a 6-1 win at Norfolk to end the previous week.

In a rare moment, “O Canada” was sung at the North Charleston Coliseum prior to their shootout win against the Brampton Beast. Their visitors from Ontario proved stiff comeptition as Drew Fielding stopped all nine Rays shots; Mark Dekanich likewise stopped the five shots he faced in the opening twenty minutes.

14 seconds into the second, Brett Cameron put his twelfth goal of the year past Fielding on a quick snap shot. 12 seconds later, Joe Zarbo scored to tie the game at one. Back from his stint in the AHL, Joe Devin scored his 10th ECHL goal on the power play. Dekanich and Fielding remained sharp and the score stayed 2-1 Rays after two periods.

Continuing the trend of a quick start, Reggie Traccitto potted home a rebound to tie the game at two and Nick McParland put the Beast in the lead on another rebound. Quickly afterard, Kevin Quick tied the game from a point-shot.

Late power plays, including one in overtime, did not provide the spark needed for the Stingrays to break the tie. Zarbo scored in the first round for the Beast and Devin responded in kind. Dekanich then denied Luc-Oliver Blain and Steven Kaunisto while David Pacan scored to finish the game with a shootout win.

If teams trading goals was the narrative if the Beast game, thourough domination was the story behind the matchup with the Florida Everblades. Gabriel Desjardins scored first for the visitors, followed by a power play strike from Brett Cameron. From there, the Rays did not look back.

With the door to Dekanich’s crease shut for good, eight different Rays scored for the win in front of the armed forces for Military Appreciation Night. David Pacan followed up Cameron’s goal with his 15th on the year and Stephan Vigier hit a power play marker before the period was over.

Nick D’Agostino and Joe Devin combined to strike within two minutes of each other while Patrick Gaul’s late goal proved to be the end of the night for Rasmus Tirronen. Anthony Peters did not prove much better in relief, allowing Casey Thrush and Paul Rodrigues (PP) to score and finsih the game 8-1.
