South Carolina Stingrays

Catching Up Caps Fans on the ECHL Finals

via the Stingrays

Let’s be honest- the ECHL isn’t the NHL, or even the AHL. But the South Carolina Stingrays are affiliated with the Capitals, and are one game away from winning the Kelly Cup against the Allen Americans.

This 3-3-1 format has been one amazing series. The Stingrays had a 2-1 series lead heading back to home ice. They only needed 2 of 3 to win the Kelly Cup, but in the Game 4, the Stingrays fought hard and ended up losing in two overtimes. The series was tied at 2-2. In Game 5, again 60 minutes was again not enough as Americans’ Gregor Hanson scored to push the Stingrays to the brink of elimination.

On June 10, the Stingrays came out and dominated the Americans en route to a 4-1 victory in the last game in Charleston this season. Now we’re headed back to Texas.

So that’s the scenario.

For those who still need more background on what’s going on: The Stingrays are the ECHL affiliates of both the Boston Bruins and of course, your Washington Capitals. They’re backstopped by 32-year-old Jeff Jakaitis. Their captain is 27-year-old Andrew Rowe who had 33 points with 14 goals this postseason. Another big name you should listen for is Capitals prospect Caleb Herbert. He was drafted in round 5 back in 2010. This postseason he has 14 points with 11 assists, while +8 with 45 shots on goal.

You can listen to Joseph Zakrzewski call the game, which is Sunday at 5:05 Eastern with the pregame starting at 4:35. Now let’s go get ourselves a cup!
