Stingrays Take Game 1 in Kelly Cup Finals

It’s not often a shorthanded goal is scored in any game, let alone one where it it’s the game winner. That’s what happened on Sean Dolan‘s goal off Patrick Gaul‘s dump in. Dolan did not give up on the play; he shook off Konrad Abeltshauser‘s defense to score the final goal of a 4-3 win for the Stingrays over the Allen Americans. Game 2 will be 8:05 ET at the Allen Event Center.

The Americans opened the scoring in the first minute on a zero-angle shot by Tyler Ludwig. That would be the only goal Jeff Jakaitis allowed for almost 25 minutes on his way to a 21 save performance. Stingrays captain Andrew Rowe tied the game on a superb one-man effort, stealing the puck at the red line and blowing by two more defensemen to beat Riley Gill. Wayne Simpson would follow up with two goals of his own, one on a tic-tac-toe passing play and the other on a deflection after the forecheck of Rowe kept the puck in the offensive zone. The Americans would tie the game with two goals right on top of Jakaitis’s crease before Dolan’s winner late in the third.

Yesterday, Allen, Texas Mayor Steve Terrell answered the challenge of North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey. But he didn’t just accept the challenge, he raised the stakes in true Texas fashion.

The original stakes were one pig for one hog. Now, the ante is up to five hogs for one cow. Mayor Summey has yet to respond to this new challenge.

This afternoon’s game moved the Stingrays one step closer to the Kelly Cup… and a big steak dinner courtesy of Allen, Texas.
