Celebrating his 25th birthday, John Carlson scored his fifth goal of the season Saturday, putting the Capitals up 2-0 early in the second period against the Red Wings at Verizon Center.

It was the first time Carlson says he ever scored a goal on his birthday. “I don’t think I’ve played on it before.”

What did his teammates get him for his birthday? What did Karl Alzner get him?

“Nothing,” Carlson said, not seeming too disappointed. “I don’t care.”

He actually did get something, however. He got the Honest Abe.
