Spring Puck Surprise Winners Meet Alex Ovechkin

Photos by Caps Outsider

Each Spring, the Capitals raise money for charity by selling autographed pucks to fans. The fans don’t know ahead of time which autograph they’ll get (the ‘surprise’ part of this), but those who get pucks that aren’t autographed get to meet a player after the game. Last year, it was Mike Green. This year, it was supposed to be Brooks Laich, but Laich was unavailable due to an injury, which you can read about on DC Sports Bog (not for the faint of heart). So the Caps had to find a substitute for Laich, and decided to give Alex Ovechkin a shot at this. Ovi handled it remarkably well, as if he has done similar things before.

The lucky winners:

Amy Lopez, of Gaithersburg, Md.
Caps fan since ’87.
Level of excitement for meeting Ovi: 10/10

Jerry Negin, of Manassas, Va.
Caps season ticket holder for 11 years
Excitement level: 10/10
Also won the chance to meet Mike Knuble two years ago in this same program.

Danny Brown, of Annapolis, Md.
Caps fan for 14 years
Excitement level: 10-12/10. Later revised it to 19.5/10

Gabbie Morris, of Bethesda, Md.
Caps fan for all 22 years of her life
Excitement level: 10 to the 10th degree

Stephanie Turner, of Davidsonville, Md.
Caps fan for 15 years
Excitement level: 10/10 and also added a remark that would only embarrass her later

The drive raised $18,000 for Monumental Sports & Entertainment charities, including Potomac Valley Amateur Hockey Association, KaBoom!, and Playworks DC.

For the record, Ovi was asked to sign her hoodie – he didn’t just start writing his name on people.

Ovi signs a bag with his name on it.

I hope Brooks Laich signed some of these.
