Good Luck, Dennis Wideman!

While Dennis Wideman will have left a hole in the hearts of Caps fans, he’s left the door wide open for all the up-and-coming defensemen.

He was traded Wednesday, June 27, to the Calgary Flames for defenseman Jordan Henry (who goes UFA on July 1) and a fifth round pick in the 2013 draft.  According to General Manager George McPhee, talks had started between Calgary and the Caps at the draft, but didn’t amount to anything until now.

Just hours after the Wideman-to-Calgary deal was announced, good ‘ol Dennis signed a five-year contract with the Flames.

Well, Wides, it’s been fun. As McPhee said, he was here to do his job. He filled in when Mike Green was injured, and now it’s time to part ways and let the new young guns shine through.

A word of advice before you go, though. Remember that you’ll be facing the San Jose Sharks twice at HP Pavilion this year.  You might want to figure out those pesky doors before then.

And here’s hoping that you’ll finally get that hattrick. Maybe this time Brooks Laich won’t be there to rain on his parade.

Good luck in Calgary, Dennis. We’ll miss you.
