The 2nd annual Leap Towards A Cure presented by Outback Steakhouse, Laurel, MD, a charity ice hockey tournament and Community Festival, will welcome hundreds of adult hockey players and members of the metropolitan community to The Gardens Ice House in Laurel for a three-day extravaganza on August 5-7, 2011.

Leap Towards A Cure is an annual tournament held in memory of Andrea “Froggy” Henderson, who passed away on April 12, 2010 after a short battle with breast cancer. Froggy taught at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, MD for 30 years and sponsored the growth of the ERHS Ice Raiders, the school’s hockey team, for a decade. It is in Froggy’s honor that several former Ice Raiders banded together to create this charity event.

This year Leap Towards A Cure proudly includes an exhibition game featuring Washington Capitals alumni against ERHS alumni on Saturday, August 6 at 4:00 pm, immediately preceded by a skills competition featuring local players and tournament participants.

More than 270 hockey players on 20 teams will participate in three days of ice hockey tournament games, running from Friday, August 5 through Sunday, August 7.

“Froggy was more than just a team sponsor. She was the person in school that we all knew we could go to if we were having issues, whether they were academic or personal,” said ERHS alumnus Craig Stone, who lives in New York City. “Even though I’m not in the area anymore, I couldn’t pass up this opportunity to play some hockey in Froggy’s memory.”

In recognition of Froggy’s impact on all of her students Leap Towards A Cure also features a Community Festival on Saturday, August 6 from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm, with free games and creative activities for kids, and lite-fare food from Outback Steakhouse, Laurel, MD.

Last year’s inaugural Leap Towards A Cure raised over $7,000 for cancer treatment, research, and education at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins. Leap Towards A Cure is operated by the Andrea Henderson Memorial Fund, Inc., a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. All proceeds from Leap Towards A Cure benefit the Kimmel Center.
