Caps Prospects Shine at Memorial Cup

While the Caps’ season ended a couple weeks ago, three of their prospects were still competing for the Memorial Cup of the Canadian Hockey League.

Kootenay Ice’s Cody Eakin (C, drafted 85th overall in 2009), Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors’ Brett Flemming (D, drafted 145th overall in 2009) and Saint John Sea Dogs’ Stanislav Galiev (LW, drafted 86th overall in 2010) all advanced, with their teams, to the tournament that hosted the best of each major Canadian hockey league. Kootenay came as the Western Hockey League Champions, Saint John was the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Champions and while Mississauga lost the Ontario Hockey League Championship to the Owen Sound Attack, it’s the host team so the Majors made it to the tournament.

Owen Sound finished the tournament in fourth, Kootenay finished third and Galiev and Flemming battled it out for the title. The Saint John Sea Dogs were able to beat the Mississagau St. Michael Majors 3-1 to become the 2011 Memorial Cup Champions Sunday night.

About Those Capitals Bobbleheads

Many Capitals fans have acquired quite a collection of bobbleheads over the past few years, and will be happy to hear that more are on the way. This past season, the Caps distributed Brooks Laich at the blood drive, Mike Knuble with the Caps Kids Club, and Alex Ovechkin in a Winter Classic uniform with the Holiday Pack. Semyon Varlamov came out for the March blood drive, and everyone in attendance for Fan Appreciation Day on April 6 received Nicklas Backstrom. Of the current Capitals, these fellas join Alexander Semin, John Carlson, Bruce Boudreau, Mike Green, Slapshot and other Ovechkins on the mantle.

Next up? Jeff Schultz at the July blood drive.

It’s official folks. The Capitals cast for The Winter Classic 2011: The Movie has been picked. We last left you with a list of possible picks for each role but our brain-trust narrowed it down to one for each role. Now all we need is for someone to write the script, someone to call these actors and tell them they got the parts, and for Uncle Ted to finance the film so we can put it on snagfilms.com.

Oh, and someone has got to cast the Penguins. Any volunteers?

Derek Boogaard’s Last Goal

The New York Rangers announced in a news release Friday that winger Derek Boogaard died at the age of 28. The last goal of his career (one of three) came against the Capitals back in November, and it was a beauty. Here it is:

The goal, courtesy of a Tyler Sloan turnover, broke a 234 game-drought for Boogaard. Washington won the game, 5-3.

John Erskine wrote on Twitter: “Deepest sympathies to the Boogaard family. One of the toughest guys I’ve ever played with. You will be missed Boogie-man. Great memories.”

Third Period and Overtime of Game 4: Caps Stave Off Elimination

Down 3-0 in the second round series in Tampa Bay, and down 3-2 in the third period of Game 4, the Washington Capitals avoided a humiliating playoff elimination to the 5th-seeded Lightning with a 4-3 overtime victory. The Caps can thank Michal Neuvirth, who robbed Marc-Andre Bergeron on the power play early in the third, then Martin St. Louis late in the period. With the minutes ticking down and the golf courses within view, defenseman John Carlson tied the game on the power play.

Ten minutes into sudden death, Jason Arnott intercepted a pass along the boards and centered to Alex Semin, who toe-dragged around Eric Brewer and beat Dwayne Roloson glove-side. It was Semin’s second overtime game-winner in the playoffs, the first since his winner against New York.

“As I’ve been saying all series, the Capitals are dangerous,” Guy Boucher said in the post game press conference. “Having said that, I now believe that we are capable of beating this team in this series.”

“Arnie pass the puck and I shoot,” Semin said through a translator.

The Four Games of Grief

The handshakes are over, the exit interviews have been filmed, the planes are taking off. In Washington D.C., the off-season has begun. The players who call this place home for months on end have departed for their homelands, leaving us fans here to wallow in the aftermath. We are left to mourn.

We have had the chance to reflect since being eliminated Wednesday, analyze what should and shouldn’t have been done, and how we prepare for the next run. And as we look back on the series, in hindsight we see evidence of the end; outshooting the Lightning with no real scoring chances, ineffective power plays, repeated bad turnovers. We look back and realize that we knew the end was coming, and that we all started grieving long ago.
