Eric Staal’s Bloody Mess

Hurricanes’ captain Eric Staal apparently got clipped with a high stick and bled all over the inside right circle during the second period of Tuesday’s game. Not until the ice resurfacer ran over it did the stain disappear.

This would be Staal’s contribution to the Inova blood drive recently held by the Caps. Photos of the cleanup effort after the jump.

Breaking News: Irbe’s Facebook Page Not Really Him

It brings me no pleasure to announce that the Arturs Irbe Facebook page, the one in which the quirky goaltending coach contributes only by enthusiastically announcing the number of fans he has, is not really him. When asked about it, Irbe and the Capitals’ media relations denied that he runs the page.

This should be heartbreaking news for more than 900 folks who fell for this hoax, as we ‘liked’ a page that we actually thought that he ran himself. It’s also happens to be one of the top results on Google when searching for his name, which makes it that much more appealing.

This goes to show that you cannot believe anything on the Internet, ever, now that the Arturs Irbe Facebook page owner has been discovered to be an imposter.

Irbe did, however tell me that he might check out the page now that he knows it exists.

It’s a good thing that goalies wear masks, because Michal Neuvirth doesn’t exactly have a pitbull’s glare of aggression that sparks pants-wetting fear in opponents with a glance alone. Varlamov Bobbleheads Hit eBay

As we’ve discovered, the most valuable Capitals bobbleheads are those given out at the blood drives, because they’re more limited than the others and you’ve got to give blood to get one. This weekend, the Caps held another Inova blood drive, with Semyon Varlamov bobbles as the prize to those who rolled up their sleeves.

Sure enough, a few folks who either participated in the blood drive or weaseled their way into getting a Varley bobblehead have listed the item on eBay, and they’re sure to get a nice payday out of it.

Here is one, already trading at $35 with a couple days remaining.
Here’s another, trading at $31 with eight days remaining.
And… one for a starting price of $199.95. That’s some expensive blood.

Expect more Varlamov’s to be listed. Let’s see if Varley can eclipse the $114 a Brooks Laich bobblehead sold for back in December.

Are Caps Fans Also Ozzy Fans?

Several celebrities lately who seemingly have no ties to Washington have suddenly been jumping on the Capitals bandwagon for various reasons, including Pauly D from Jersey Shore, comedian Tom Green, and now heavy metal legend Ozzy Osbourne.

We know Green’s story, and we know Pauly and Ovie have been caught paling around. But Ozzy?

Other than the Caps game entertainment folks playing his music, especially his latest hit Let Me Hear You Scream, Osbourne makes as much sense as a D.C. celebrity mascot as Green or Pauly D. As in: None. But who cares? The real question is, as a Caps fan, do you LIKE his sudden involvement? As an Ozzy fan who has attended a couple of the Ozzfests, my answer is: LAME.

Don’t Send Holtby Back Down Again Box Score

A day after getting sent back up from the minors, Braden Holtby continued his hot streak with his second shutout in Washington’s 2-0 victory in Montreal.

So if we keep Holtby up, then what? Varley, when he’s not hurt, and Neuvy, when he’s not sick, can be the backup. Advice I’m sure the Caps will print from this blog and seriously consider.

Bradley Be Bleedin’

Note to the NHL: The first period hit on Matt Hendricks WAS a penalty. It’s called high-sticking. The officials alleged it was an ice skate that apparently high-sticked him in the corner (or something along those lines). Replay says otherwise.

Another note to the NHL: Matt Bradley’s third period ‘boarding’ penalty, which happened about seven feet from the boards in Washington’s 2-0 loss to Ottawa, was NOT a boarding penalty. The hit was clean, and the player slid into the boards. Regardless, it led to a fight which led to another Bradley Be Bleedin’ episode which led to very lousy photos of my television, and the fight video after the jump.
