the whooping yell started with Larry Murphy when he left town and promptly won cups with the Pens and the Wings. The other big player was Gonchar. As far as I know this is only for defensemen who leave. (Example: Jagr was booed, and nobody said anything for Jeff Halpern or Dainus Zubrus)

I thought we yelled “O” because of OVI? I’m a veteran and it doesn’t bother me either.

What does bother me is fans who get so freaking stinking drunk they ruin it for everyone sitting near them. Glad you people have a good time, but you really ruin it for everyone else. Yeah it’s a sporting event, ok ok, but if you can get wasted AND retain some manners then I’ll be impressed. Otherwise, I already know all the swear words — thanks! xox

About the screaming during the national anthem, get over it. I am annoyed that I have to put up with an obnoxious and ungermane display of nationalism at all.

About the leaning, get over it. I sometimes sit in the first row of 400 level and if you don’t lean forward you have to watch the whole game through a pane of glass, which distorts the view and gives you a headache. I lean over as little as possible so that the glass is just below the near-side boards. Unfortunately, the building design does not allow for a clear view to those that want to sink into their seat for the whole game. If it really bothers you, you can sit back as long as you like on the couch as you watch on tv at home.

I come down from Baltimore and spend my families hard earned money to go to these games. The blah blah blah respect the veterans old saw about the “O” is tired. I’m a veteran myself and I yell “O”.

It was last season that the “It’s all your fault” started, not “this year” as someone stated in the comments. Click the link above to see a WaPo story on it, and a video of the guy who claims to have started it all.

Also, the Whoop Whoop is supposed to be reserved for former Caps D-men, and only those worthy of the honor. It did start with Murphy, but it would be deemed appropriate for someone like Sergei Gonchar, but not Emminger or knuckleheads like Brendan Witt.
