Free Pucks, Sticks, Burgers and Pizza
Longtime Capitals fans know what I’m talking about. Back at the old Capital Centre, we got free Capitals pucks the day before Thanksgiving. Hockey sticks for the kids on New Year’s Day. A Bob’s Big Boy burger coupon when the Caps pitched a shutout. Best of all, a pizza coupon when the Caps scored six goals, which usually happened in the third period as the fans chanted ‘Pizza! Pizza!’
I still have many of those free Capitals pucks. The sticks broke, but only after many games of street hockey with friends. My family always headed to Bob’s Big Boy for the burgers, and you can be certain that we also went to Jerry’s for the pizza.
Now, it’s bobbleheads and schedule magnets.
But hey, though the Caps have had greats like Rod Langway and Dale Hunter, they’ve never had a player as good as Alex Ovechkin. So let’s reflect on the fun times of the past and also enjoy the present. Happy Thanksgiving from Capitals Outsider.
